Over the weekend we celebrated with family Mila’s Great Nanny’s 90th birthday. Great Nanny is almost completely blind and so we wanted to create a handmade present from Mila which she could experience through her sense of touch.
Puff paint pictures are lots of fun and very easy to make. Mila loved using the paintbrushes and after the pictures were created she especially loved exploring the paint with her hands and mouth which I tipped onto her highchair tray!
To make puff paint you will need:
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup salt
Add water to the ingredients until it reaches your desired consistency. I made it a little bit thicker so that it was easy for Mila to spread. Place painted picture on a plate and microwave for 30-45 seconds (or until the paint has hardend).
For Mila I only made half of this mixture which was plenty to create her art. For her age Mila was more interested in using the paintbrushes and her hands but for older children pouring some paint into sealable glad bags, cutting off a corner and allowing the paint to drip onto the paper would create a more 3D picture when it is cooked.
It was so special to watch Mila giving Great Nanny her artwork and watching them both exploring it through their sense of touch. We all enjoyed this precious time spent together celebrating a very special birthday with so many of the ones we love.
